Vegetable tanning is the oldest way of making leather.
Vegetable tanned leathers are made using tannins from bark, wood, leaves and other parts of trees. It is thought that the process was originally discovered by hides being left in the brown forest pools full of tanning from dropped twigs and leaves from surrounding trees.
The way that different tans look, age with handling and in the light is appreciated by designers when choosing the leathers for different end use.
Today we find vegetable tanned leathers in everything from the strongest footwear to the finest leather wallets and purses. It is used in furniture and amazing aspects of interior design.
